Design and Technology
*Please note our curriculum is currently under review, in preparation for our Community Curriculum launch for September 2026, and therefore documentation may vary on this page as and when it is completed. Current curriculum documentation is at the bottom of the page.

Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject.
Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Northway Infant School, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.
Design and Technology should provide children with a real life context for learning. Through the DT SHINE curriculum, children should be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real life purpose.
Key skills and key knowledge for DT have been mapped across the school to ensure progression between year groups. This also ensures that there is a context for the children’s work in DT; that they learn about real life structures and the purpose of specific examples, as well as developing their skills throughout the programme of study. Design and technology lessons are taught within a themed block so that children’s learning is focused throughout each unit of work and learning is linked to real life challenges and is interwoven through the theme.
